Bronchiolitis Awareness Campaign 2012

Dear parent,

We are right at the start of the Bronchiolitis 'season' and I wanted to flag up an awareness campaign we are supporting.

It's important information for all parents with young children but especially for those with new borns and that is why we are contacting you.

One in three babies in the UK develops bronchiolitis in the first year of life so please take a moment to look up the symptoms and prevention tips. In 3% of cases babies are admitted to hospital so rather than worry please take a look at this excellent information.

If your babies were born at 35 weeks of gestation or less, and are currently less than 6 months of age, they may benefit from being immunised against the virus that most commonly causes Bronchiolitis.*

If your babies fall into this group then your neonatal unit should have already told you about getting your babies immunised. Nevertheless, if you were missed or want to know more please talk to your GP.

We are trying to ensure everyone at risk is told and gets appropriate treatment so if you were missed please let us know, or if you talk to your GP, then do let us know how you get on.

Born Silently Campaign

On 2nd July 2012 Steve and Bethany Morris sadly lost their twin daughters at 21 weeks whilst on holiday in Yorkshire. Inspirationally they have decided they want to create something positive from this devastating experience and have decided to undertake a major fundraising challenge in honour of their daughters. In November (when their daughters were due to be born) they plan to cycle the 312 miles from their home in East Sussex to Yorkshire where their daughters were born silently. ONS Statistics for 2010 show fall in multiple births

ONS multiple birth rate statistics show a fall in the rate of multiple births in 2010.

However, there is still an increase in the mulitple birth rate since 200.

Tamba CEO Keith Reed says:

"Historically there are more twins, triplets or more being born then ever before and there is an unprecedented demand for our help.

The small fall last year appears to be as a result of further regulation of fertility treatment.

Only time will tell if this is offset by mothers getting pregnant later in life, which increases the chances of having twins, triplets or more."

Tamba CEO Keith Reed held a meeting with Steve Webb MP, a minister at the Department of Work and Pensions yesterday.

Tamba’s chair of trustees and CEO, along with Duncan Hames MP (Lib Dem), Tom Greatrex MP (Labour) and Tom MacInnes from the New Policy Institute outlined the general pressures our families face.

We also focused on the concern that our very poorest families who already have children and are expecting multiples, from April 2011, will no longer be eligible for a sure start maternity grant, which currently pays £500 per baby for hard wearing goods.

After pitching our case, the Minister confirmed he understood our concerns and will come back to us. We’ll keep you posted
