What is Tamba's Helping Hands Appeal?

Helping Hands - Supporting Families in Crisis is a Tamba service, providing free, short-term, practical support in the home to families with multiples who are in severe crisis.

We provide this service all year round but the number of families needing support shoots up around the festive period.  The families we helped in January last year was double the monthly average and devastatingly included three cases of dads dying suddenly and unexpectedly.

The families we help might be facing a serious illness of parent or child, postnatal and other mental health problems or even a death of parent or child. They will already have sought external help but still need access to support, have multiples under school age, be unable to afford to pay for help and have a health professional supporting their application. They will have nowhere else to turn…and be absolutely desperate for help.

We provide support by allocating a Norland College Trained Tamba Support Practitioner who provides in-home practical multiple-specific support over a short period of time to help families through an especially desperate crisis.

One person we helped when they had nowhere else to turn was Nicky, a single parent diagnosed with breast cancer and about to face chemotherapy... You can read more about Nicky and some of the other families we have helped here.

In September 2017 we were thrilled to obtain national recognition for this invaluable service. In partnership with Norland College, we won the ‘Community Support’ category at the Nursery World Awards 2017 – a very prestigious accolade.

In the past we received some funding from Awards for All England and Awards for All Wales.  Since then we have been trying to get funding from trusts and foundations, but as a very niche service, we are finding it extremely difficult to attract this kind of funding.  Sadly, at the same time as gaining national recognition for this scheme we heard from the National Lottery that our application for a large bid had been unsuccessful (our third attempt).  We had pinned a lot of hope to this, but it was not to be. If you don't have multiples it is difficult to understand the level of crisis our families face.

So, we are now asking you, our multiple birth community to help those of you in desperate need, as only you, our families, can even begin to understand what it’s like to be a parent of multiples in crisis. This is a vital service and there isn’t anything out there like it for our vulnerable families, who through no fault of their own, simply cannot cope.

Tamba is asking you to make a donation of whatever you can afford to Helping Hands. Helen Turier said: “We urgently need support so parents have somewhere to turn when the absolute worst case scenario happens and we want to be able to help them in their greatest hour of need. YOUR donation will enable us to offer that life-line.”
