Movement for 6-12 month olds

1)  Along the Roll

Lie your child on his or her tummy along the roll. 

Hold the legs and move the roll several times from one side to the other.

2)   On the Ball

Sit your child on the large ball.  Hold him or her firmly and roll forwards and backwards and from side to side. Round and back again.

Repeat from behind.

3)  Touch and Name

Lie your child on his or her back.

Lightly touch various parts of the body and name e.g. head, ear, toes etc.

4)  Astride the Roll

Sit the child astride the roll facing you. Support under the arms and around the middle.

Roll slowly from side to side so that the child’s foot touches the floor and takes some weight. Stop in the middle.  Count out loud to 3 for each move.

Turn the child with his or her back to you.

Hold the legs and lean the child into your tummy.

5)  Tummy Time Fun

Lie your child on his or her tummy.

Use a rattle to attract you child’s attention.  Move it from side to side, backwards and forwards, around and about.

6)  Back on the Ball

Lie your child flat on the ball.  Hold securely around the middle.

Move slowly from side to side; backwards and forwards; all the way round and back again.

7)   Roll and Reach

Lie your child across the roll. Support the back firmly and roll slowly towards a favourite toy and back again.

8)  Rock and Roll

Lie your child on his back on the ball.  Hold the legs firmly.

Roll  backwards and forward two or three times. Roll the ball slightly to one side so that the child uses his or her arm to balance.

Back to the middle and roll backwards and forwards.

Lean to the other side so that the child uses his or her other arm to balance.

Repeat the whole sequence two or three times

9)  Touch Count

Lie your child on his or her back. Lightly touch different parts of the body counting 1, 2,3.

Turn the child on to his tummy and repeat.
